Setting the Demons Loose: Computational Irreducibility Does Not Guarantee Unpredictability or Emergence

چکیده
Abstract A phenomenon resulting from a computationally irreducible (or incompressible) process is supposedly unpredictable except via simulation. This notion of unpredictability has been deployed to formulate recent accounts computational emergence. Via technical analysis, I show that irreducibility can establish the impossibility prediction only with respect maximum standards precision. Unpredictability and Computational Irreducibility
We explore several concepts for analyzing the intuitive notion of computational irreducibility and we propose a robust formal definition, first in the field of cellular automata and then in the general field of any computable function f from N to N. We prove that, through a robust definition of what means "to be unable to compute the n th step without having to follow the same path than simulat...
متن کاملSpirometry training does not guarantee valid results.
BACKGROUND Many healthcare professionals performing spirometry in primary care have had less than half a day's training in spirometry practice, and the validity of the test results is questionable. Longer training periods, with or without follow-up training, may improve test validity. OBJECTIVE To determine if a 14-hour spirometry training course provides sufficient skill to produce valid res...
متن کاملComputational Irreducibility and Computational Analogy
In a previous paper [21], we provided a formal definition for the concept of computational irreducibility (CIR), i.e. the fact for a function f from N to N that it is impossible to compute f(n) without following approximately the same path than computing successively all the values f(i) from i=1 to n. Our definition is based on the concept of E-Turing machines (for Enumerating Turing Machines) ...
متن کاملWhy Power does not Guarantee Happiness across Cultures
Recent literature has shown that power enhances happiness in the Western context. However, it is likely that this may only hold true in cultures that promote independent and autonomous expression of self. For those in collectivist contexts, it is argued that power could reduce happiness since power can thwart them from achieving relationship harmony. The current paper presents research on the p...
متن کاملA heterogeneous landscape does not guarantee high crop pollination
The expansion of pollinator-dependent crops, especially in the developing world, together with reports of worldwide pollinator declines, raises concern of possible yield gaps. Farmers directly reliant on pollination services for food supply often live in regions where our knowledge of pollination services is poor. In a manipulative experiment replicated at 23 sites across an Ethiopian agricultu...
